The 10 Saboteurs

The Critical Voice You Think Is The Judge

“Just Being Realistic”

You know that voice in your head?

The one that says:

  • “You’re not good enough”
  • “They’re judging you”
  • “You need to work harder”
  • “Don’t mess this up”

For years, you probably thought that voice was reality, self-awareness, or motivation.

But what if I told you it’s none of those things?

What if that voice is actually a saboteur − an automatic thought pattern that’s hijacking your decisions, draining your energy, and keeping you stuck?

In Positive Intelligence, we’ve identified 10 distinct saboteurs that run (and often ruin) our lives.

Everyone has them.

But once you can name your saboteurs, you can start to weaken them.

So let’s meet them.

What Is a Saboteur?

A saboteur is an automatic thought pattern that:

  • Hijacks your response to challenges
  • Generates negative emotions (stress, anxiety, guilt, anger)
  • Keeps you stuck in self-sabotaging behaviors
  • Convinces you it’s “helping” when it’s actually hurting

Your saboteurs are like apps running in the background of your mind  draining your battery without you realizing it.

They often masquerade as “being realistic,” “protecting yourself,” or “motivating yourself to do better.”

But in reality, they’re creating the stress, anxiety, and burnout you’re trying to avoid.

The Master Saboteur: The Judge

The Master Saboteur

Every single person has this one.

The Judge is your inner critic−the voice that constantly finds fault with:

  • Yourself (“You’re not good enough”)
  • Others (“They’re so annoying”)
  • Circumstances (“This always happens to me”)

The Judge generates shame, guilt, regret, disappointment, and anxiety.

Most people think the Judge is motivating them to do better.

But research shows the opposite.

The Judge actually drains your energy, decreases performance, kills creativity, and creates chronic stress.

The Judge is NOT your friend.

The 9 Accomplice Saboteurs

10 Saboteurs at a Glance

While everyone has the Judge, most people have 1–3 “accomplice” saboteurs that work alongside it.

These shape how you respond to challenges.

1. THE CONTROLLER

Core Belief: “I need to control everything and everyone to be safe.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “If I don’t manage this, it will fall apart”
  • “Nobody else can do it right”
  • “Things need to be done MY way”

How It Sabotages You:
Creates anxiety, conflict in relationships, micromanagement, inability to delegate and exhaustion from trying to control everything.

2. THE HYPER-ACHIEVER

Core Belief: “My worth = my accomplishments.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “I need to achieve more”
  • “Rest is wasting time”
  • “I’m only as good as my last success”

How It Sabotages You:
Constant striving (never “enough”), burnout, workaholism, loss of connection and depression when you’re not achieving.

3. THE VICTIM

Core Belief: “Life happens to me.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “Why does this always happen to me?”
  • “I can’t help it”
  • “Nobody understands”

How It Sabotages You:
Creates powerlessness, self-pity, martyr complex, inability to take responsibility and resentment.

4. THE HYPER-RATIONAL

Core Belief: “Emotions are weak. Logic is everything.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “Feelings aren’t facts”
  • “Let’s be rational about this”
  • “I don’t need connection − I need results”

How It Sabotages You:
Disconnection from yourself and others, inability to build deep relationships, cold approach to life and suppressed emotions.

5. THE HYPER-VIGILANT

Core Belief: “I need to be constantly alert to danger.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “What could go wrong?”
  • “I need to prepare for every possibility”
  • “It’s not safe to relax”

How It Sabotages You:
Chronic anxiety, inability to enjoy the present moment, constant worry and exhaustion from never feeling safe.

6. THE RESTLESS

Core Belief: “More excitement = more happiness.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “I’m bored”
  • “What’s next?”
  • “This isn’t exciting anymore”

How It Sabotages You:
Inability to commit, constant distraction, FOMO, never feeling satisfied and starting things without finishing.

7. THE PLEASER

Core Belief: “I need everyone to like me and approve of me.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “I need to make everyone happy”
  • “If they’re upset, it’s my fault”
  • “I can’t handle conflict”

How It Sabotages You:
People-pleasing, loss of self, resentment, inability to say no and exhaustion from putting everyone else first.

8. THE STICKLER

Core Belief: “Everything must be perfect and done the right way.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “That’s not good enough”
  • “There’s a right way to do this”
  • “I can’t tolerate mistakes”

How It Sabotages You:
Perfectionism, rigidity, procrastination, criticism of self and others and inability to enjoy the process.

9. THE AVOIDER

Core Belief: “Conflict and difficulty should be avoided at all costs.”

What It Sounds Like:

  • “Let’s not deal with that right now”
  • “It’s fine, don’t worry about it”
  • “Can’t we all just get along?”

How It Sabotages You:
Procrastination, unresolved conflicts, passive-aggressive behavior, inability to have difficult conversations and festering problems.

Which Saboteurs Are Running Your Life?

Most people have 1–3 primary accomplice saboteurs (plus the Judge).

Here’s a quick way to identify yours:

Think about a recent stressful situation. Which voice showed up?

  • Controller: “I need to fix this now”
  • Hyper-Achiever: “I need to work harder”
  • Victim: “Why does this always happen to me?”
  • Hyper-Rational: “Let me analyze this logically”
  • Hyper-Vigilant: “What else could go wrong?”
  • Restless: “I need a distraction”
  • Pleaser: “How can I make everyone happy?”
  • Stickler: “This isn’t good enough”
  • Avoider: “I’ll deal with it later”

That voice? That’s your saboteur.

What Happens When You Can Name Your Saboteurs

Here’s the beautiful truth:

Once you can see your saboteurs, you can start to weaken them.

Because saboteurs thrive in the shadows. They pretend to be reality, protection, motivation or help.

But once you name them, you take away their power.

Instead of believing the voice that says “You’re not good enough,” you can say:

“That’s my Judge talking.”

And suddenly you have a choice.

You can acknowledge the saboteur, recognize it isn’t truth and shift to your Sage (your positive self).

And that’s where transformation begins.

From Saboteurs to Sage: Building Mental Fitness

Your saboteurs live in the survival region of your brain.

But you also have access to the Sage region − the part of your brain that’s calm, clear, creative, compassionate and curious.

Your Sage has 5 powers:

  • Empathize – Deep connection with yourself and others
  • Explore – Curiosity and open-minded discovery
  • Innovate – Creative problem solving
  • Navigate – Values-based decision making
  • Activate – Taking decisive, clear action

When you’re in your Sage brain, you don’t need saboteurs.

You can handle challenges without anxiety, set boundaries without guilt, achieve without burnout and connect without losing yourself.

And the best part? You can build your Sage through daily mental fitness practice.

How to Weaken Your Saboteurs (And Strengthen Your Sage)

This isn’t about getting rid of your saboteurs or positive thinking.

It’s about building the mental fitness to:

  • Catch your saboteurs when they show up
  • Label them so they lose power
  • Shift to your Sage perspective
  • Choose a response that serves you

And here’s the science:

With consistent daily practice you can build new neural pathways in as little as 8 weeks.
Your brain will literally rewire.

But it requires structured daily practice − not just awareness.

Your Saboteurs Don’t Define You

Here’s what I want you to know:

Having saboteurs doesn’t make you broken. Everyone has them.

They developed to protect you when you were young. They were survival mechanisms.

But now they’re keeping you stuck.

The good news? You can change them.

You can build the mental fitness to recognize when your Judge is running the show, catch your Hyper-Achiever before burnout, notice when your Pleaser is making decisions and shift to your Sage.

You are not your saboteurs. You have the power to choose.
